Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for demining the Black Sea

The Ministers of Defense of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey will sign today, in Istanbul, the Memorandum of Understanding for demining the Black Sea, informs the Ministry of National Defense of Romania. The action is only a first step towards a permanent NATO naval presence in the Black Sea, desired by Romania, which would ensure security in the region, including for vulnerable partners such as the Republic of Moldova, reads the Karadeniz Press portal.

The operational structure of the Black Sea Mine Action Task Force, with a rotating command every six months and two planned activations in each rotation, will contribute to the deterrence and defense of the Eastern Flank while also facilitating the safety of navigation.

Thus, NATO and its partners will be able to participate in the activities of the Group with the aim of developing cooperation in support of the Black Sea security.

We remind that President Klaus Iohannis recently assured his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenski, of Bucharest's firm support for Ukraine, and the strengthening of security in the region.

Also, the Romanian Minister of Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, noted that the Republic of Moldova is exposed to Moscow's hybrid actions, and Romania will continue to support Chişinău in the areas where it needs it the most.

We remind that the establishment of the Task Force for combating sea mines in the Black Sea was initiated by Turkey in August 2023.

At the beginning of the month the Bulgarian Minister of Defense, Todor Tagarev, quoted by the media from Sofia, stated that the war in Ukraine, started by Russia, leads to security risks in the region. According to the official, in order to minimize the risks, the naval forces of Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria will be involved in the elimination of floating mines.
