The date of the presidential elections will be set by the Legislative at least 60 days before the day of the elections
Parliament re-examined the legislative initiative that provides for the amendment of the Electoral Code and the Law on Political Parties, following the reception of President Maia Sandu's statement.
The document concerns the provisions of the legislative initiative that refer to the date of the elections for the position of president of the Republic of Moldova. According to the latest changes made in the Electoral Code, the polling date was established no later than 90 days before the elections. According to the president, for the predictability of the electoral process, but also for the organization and conduct of free, fair and transparent elections, that date must be set earlier than no more than 90 days before the election.
Therefore, the organization of the presidential election will be established, by decision of the Parliament, at least 60 days before the election day, according to the new amendments approved today.
Also, the approach mentions the inconsistency of the term for organizing elections in case of a vacancy of the position of the president of the country with the constitutional norms. In this context, it is recommended to strictly adopt the text of the constitutional norm, in order to ensure its supremacy, reads a press release of the Legislative.
Therefore, in the event of a vacancy in the office of the President of the Republic of Moldova, the elections will be organized within two months from the date of the vacancy.
We remind that the draft amendment to the Electoral Code and the Law on Political Parties was adopted by the Parliament at the end of the autumn session and, according to the legislators, aims to improve the electoral process, as well as to ensure transparency and fairness in the conduct of elections.
