The Kyiv government started public debates regarding the establishment of the Romanian Language Day
The Kyiv government is organizing public debates on February 7 to discuss the proposal to establish the Day of the Romanian Language in Ukraine, writes veridica.ro. The State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience requested representative organizations of the Romanian minority in Ukraine to send a point of view regarding this proposal and the date to be chosen to mark this holiday.
The initiative belongs to the "Bassarabia" Association of Romanians from the Odesa region, which proposed that the Day of the Romanian Language be marked on August 31, and the Kyiv Government invited the associative environment to pronounce on this initiative.
If the decision is positive, Romanian will be the first language, after Ukrainian, to enjoy an official holiday in Ukraine, the president of the "Bassarabia" Association, Anatol Popescu, told Veridica.
At the end of last year, the Ministry of Culture in Kyiv did not approve the initiative, considering that the establishment of the Romanian Language Day at the state level "could stimulate other ethnic groups to demand the recognition of their language day, a fact that can create tension in society".
