Moldovan EU accession nears: Law alignment begins
Marking a crucial step towards EU membership, Moldova will begin assessing its laws against EU standards in February, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced on February 1.
This "screening" process comes after the historic December 2023 decision to open accession negotiations with the bloc.
"2023 was a year of milestones," Grosu stated. "Now, 2024 is about the hard work – meticulous preparation and negotiation for eventual accession." He emphasised the importance of "anchoring Moldova in peace, prosperity, and democracy," highlighting the EU's role in achieving these goals Parliament of the Republic of Moldova reports.
Grosu also confirmed a referendum on EU membership later this year. "Moldovans have repeatedly expressed their desire to join the European family," he said, emphasising the referendum's importance in solidifying this public will. "By autumn, we will settle this issue definitively".
Following the December council vote, the "screening" phase will thoroughly compare Moldovan legislation to the EU's acquis communautaire, the body of its laws and regulations. Only after successfully aligning its laws will Moldova proceed to formal negotiations on the 35 chapters covering various aspects of EU membership.
