Chisinau school funding dispute escalates

Tension is rising in Moldova as Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban and Education Minister Dan Perciun clash over school funding and leadership.

Mayor Declares "War" on Ministry:

Following the appointment of Viorica Negrea as head of the Municipal Education Department by Minister Perciun, Mayor Ceban announced the end of City Hall's financial support for extended-day school programs. In a live broadcast, he declared: "You have captured the institution, you have put your boss there, be good and responsible... We will think about how to invest in education programs, otherwise".

Minister Calls for Parental Protest:

Perciun responded by urging parents to attend the City Council meeting and voice their concerns about the funding cuts. On social media, he wrote: "If they eventually mention that the founder is the Chisinau City Hall... why did you interfere and put your leader here? You put your leader here, so you are responsible for everything".

National Commission Intervenes:

The National Commission for Exceptional Situations (CSE) revoked two decisions made by the Chisinau municipality related to the dispute. One required parents to pay for extracurricular activities, the other overturned the dismissal of Andrei Pavaloi as head of the Municipal Education Department. Minister Perciun deemed both decisions "illegal" and accused officials of overstepping their authority.
