The Republic of Moldova has joined the EU sanctions against a Russian diamond-producing company
Nine countries, including the Republic of Moldova, joined the decision of the Council of the European Union to sanction a Russian company producing diamonds, announced the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it, the EU diplomat added, quoted by Ukrainskaia Pravda.
"They will ensure that their national policies are consistent with the Council decision. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it".
The countries joining these sanctions are the EU candidate countries - North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the European Free Trade Association countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
We remind that, this January, the EU Council added the Russian diamond mining giant Alrosa to the list of sanctions. The company is an important part of the economic sector, which provides significant revenues to the government of the Russian Federation.
This decision complements the ban on the import of Russian diamonds included in the 12th package of economic and individual sanctions of the EU bloc, adopted on December 18, 2023, in connection with Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
