Moldova to Get EU Boost for Justice Reform

The European Union has pledged financial support to help Moldova modernise its justice system.

The Foreign Policy and European Integration Committee of Moldova's Parliament last week approved an agreement for participation in the EU's "Justice" Program, according to a parliament press release.

The program aims to bolster cooperation between Moldova and the EU in strengthening the rule of law, particularly focusing on the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.

"The 'Justice' Program offers funding for training judges and other legal professionals," the press release states. "It is open to national authorities applying for justice reform projects and civil society organisations."

With a total budget of €305 million allocated for 2021-2027, the program dedicates over €40 million specifically to projects in 2024.

Strengthening Independence, Impartiality

This financial assistance comes amid ongoing efforts to improve Moldova's justice system. The EU has previously highlighted concerns about the rule of law in the country, urging stronger measures to ensure judicial independence and combat corruption.

The "Justice" Program's focus on training and capacity building aligns with Moldova's stated aims for its justice reform. The country's Justice Reform Strategy 2022-2025 emphasises the need for "professional and independent judges and prosecutors who enjoy public trust."
