Extraordinary presidential elections are being held in Azerbaijan
More than six million Azeris with the right to vote are expected to participate in the extraordinary presidential elections held on Wednesday in Azerbaijan, reports Agerpres.
The Azerbaijani diplomatic representation states in a press release that it is the first time in the history of independent Azerbaijan that the elections cover the entire territory of the country.
"As a result of the anti-terrorist measures carried out in September 2023, Azerbaijan stood out from the ranks of countries such as Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, which faced similar problems after gaining independence, and managed to restore its territorial integrity," reads the press release with reference to taking full control over the Nagorno Karabakh region, populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, after more than thirty years of secessionism and war.
6,354,556 Azeri citizens with the right to vote are expected to participate in the presidential elections. Along with all the ethnic minorities living on the territory of Azerbaijan, the Armenian national minority has the right to participate in the elections, informs the embassy.
According to the cited source, within the "Great Return" program, for the first time in history, former internally displaced persons who have returned to their ancestral homes in Hankendi, Şuşa, Lacin, Kelbadjar and other liberated regions and villages will vote. About 23,000 voters will exercise their constitutional rights, regardless of nationality, at 26 polling stations created in these areas. Citizens of the country living outside of Azerbaijan are also expected to actively participate in voting. Voting stations were created for them in various countries of the world, including in European states, France, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, the Republic of Moldova, as well as in diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan in other countries.
