Citizens who refuse to participate in the population and housing census risk fines

The people who will refuse to complete the census questionnaires and cannot be convinced by any method, risk being fined, said the director of the National Bureau of Statistics, Oleg Cara, at a press conference. According to him, the legislation of the Republic of Moldova provides for the obligation to participate in the census, and in cases where people avoid using any method to answer the reviewer's questions, fines can be applied.

"Law 231 of 2022 regarding the census expressly indicates that the participation of individuals is mandatory, the contraventional code also contains some provisions to discourage non-participation in this census. Fines will be applied in emergency cases, if the person cannot be persuaded to participate. We will take steps to convince that the census is only for the benefit of the citizens", declared Oleg Cara.

We remind that the population and housing census will take place from April 8 to July 7, a longer period than the 2014 exercise that lasted only two weeks. Information will be collected by over four thousand reviewers.
