Moldova: 2030 EU Bid Hinges on Reform, Resources
Joining the European Union by 2030 is achievable for Moldova, says Jānis Mažeiks, Head of the EU Delegation, but only if the country maintains reforms and allocates resources, as reported by Ziarul National (National Newspaper).
This goal, described as "ambitious" by Mažeiks, reflects shared aspirations between Moldova and the EU.
Progress Hinges on Reform and Resources: "It all depends on how quickly Moldova advances," Mažeiks emphasised. Maintaining the current pace, securing ample resources, and adhering to necessary reforms are crucial, he underscored. "This objective can be realistic," he concluded, "if these elements are sustained."
Transnistria Issue Not an Insurmountable Barrier: Regarding the breakaway region of Transnistria, Mažeiks clarified that "Moldova could join the EU without it." The EU's sole partner in accession negotiations remains the Chișinău government, he stressed.
Addressing Transnistria: While advocating for resolving the Transnistrian issue before EU membership, Mažeiks recognized Moldova's predicament. "We don't want Moldova to be held hostage," he stated, implying potential EU entry for Moldova even without Transnistria's immediate inclusion.
Moldova's EU Journey: This news follows Moldova's official EU membership application on March 3, 2022. Subsequent milestones included attaining candidate status on June 23, 2022, and securing approval for accession negotiations on December 14, 2023.
