European Commission Approves €241 Million Aid Package for Romanian Farmers

In response to the challenges faced by Romanian agricultural producers amidst the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the European Commission has given the green light to a €241 million aid scheme.

The scheme, as outlined in a statement by the EU executive, aims to provide crucial support to farmers grappling with financial instability due to disruptions in the agricultural market.

This aid scheme, approved under the temporary crisis framework for state aid, will be distributed in the form of direct grants. Specifically targeting producers of winter crops and rapeseed, whose financial liquidity has been jeopardised by the ongoing conflict, the support is capped at €280,000 per beneficiary and will be available until June 30, 2024.

According to the Commission's assessment, the measure is deemed necessary, appropriate, and proportionate to address the significant economic challenges faced by a member state. This conclusion aligns with Article 107(3)(b) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and adheres to the conditions specified within the temporary framework.
