Swedish Troops to Join NATO Defense in Latvia
NATO is preparing a camp in Latvia to host Swedish troops, showcasing Sweden's active engagement despite its pending membership application, Euronews has reported.
"Sweden will send a battalion-sized mechanised unit to join NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) in Latvia," Euronews reported. This multinational force, led by Canada, strengthens frontline defence against potential Russian aggression in the Baltic region.
The Swedish battalion will rotate every six months with a similar Danish unit, demonstrating increased regional cooperation within the alliance.
This move coincides with Sweden's participation in NATO's Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise, the largest since the Cold War. Spanning multiple countries, the drills involve 90,000 troops, including US Marines training winter warfare skills in Norway.
Launched on January 22nd, Steadfast Defender aims to test NATO's collective defence capabilities and reassure allies in the Baltics. The exercise will conclude in May.
