Moldova: Sandu Prepares for EU Referendum, Meets Press
Moldovan President Maia Sandu met with national and regional journalists on February 13th to discuss the upcoming referendum on joining the European Union (EU).
Emphasising the media's role, Sandu stated, "It's crucial for the press to inform the public and ensure a fair, transparent referendum."
Sandu also acknowledged the dangers of disinformation, propaganda, and citizen manipulation within the information sphere, advocating for "strong collaboration between state institutions, civil society, and professional media" to combat these risks.
This meeting marks the third with journalists regarding the referendum, part of broader consultations with various societal groups. Sandu previously called on Parliament to organise the vote, which Speaker Igor Grosu confirmed on February 1st, aligning it with the presidential election. The official date remains pending parliamentary decision.
