Moldova Parliament Approves Bill to Increase Benefits for War Veterans
The Moldovan government has proposed a bill to increase benefits for war widows, children, and parents of veterans.
The bill, which was approved by the Parliament's Social Protection, Health, and Family Commission, would increase benefits by 250 lei (about $13) per month.
The increase would benefit an estimated 570 people, including:
- Participants in World War II, including former prisoners of fascist concentration camps and ghettos
- Spouses of participants in World War II or peacetime combat operations who died in the line of duty
- Children of war veterans who died in the line of duty
- Parents of participants in peacetime combat operations or the armed conflict for the defense of the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova who died in the line of duty
The bill is expected to be approved by the Parliament in the coming weeks.
Moldova is a small country located in Eastern Europe. It was part of the Soviet Union from 1940 to 1991. Since its independence, Moldova has been involved in a very serious conflict: Transnistria War in 1992.
The country has a population of about 2.6 million people, of which a significant portion are veterans. The average monthly pension for a veteran is about 2,000 lei (about $100).
