EU accession referendum// Maia Sandu held discussions with people of culture

Public consultations on the referendum on accession to the European Union continue. The head of state, Maia Sandu, met today with a group of journalists from the field of culture, literary critics and leaders of several cultural institutions.

The President noted the important role that people of culture have in promoting national and European values and mentioned the need to strengthen people’s support for the European path of our country, reads a press release from the Presidency.

At the same time, the cited source writes that Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of correct information and communication about the EU in each community, demonstrating the unity and support of the entire society for the European integration project. Consultations on the subject of the referendum will continue with representatives of different communities and groups in society. The referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU will be held by the end of this year. A date has not yet been set.

We remind you that Maia Sandu requested the Parliament to organize a referendum on the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union. The Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, declared that the referendum will be a constitutional one and said that it will take place together with the presidential elections. In this sense, changes were also made to the Electoral Code, introducing the provision that this referendum can take place on the same day as the election of the country's president, the Parliament, or the mayors.

Deputies of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists challenged this decision of the Legislative to the Constitutional Court.
