Putin Claims "Important Victory" as Ukraine Withdraws from Avdiivka
Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed the capture of the city of Avdiivka as an "important victory", as reported by Reuters.
Ukrainian forces withdrew from the devastated eastern city after months of intense fighting, the country's military chief announced on Saturday.
This advance marks Moscow's most significant gain since the capture of Bakhmut in May last year. It comes just days before the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion and as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of ammunition. New US military aid has been delayed for months in Congress.
This capture is the clearest sign yet that the momentum of the war has shifted in Russia's favour after a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive last year.
"The president congratulated our military and fighters on this important victory, on this success," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state news agencies.
The White House stated that Ukraine's withdrawal was due to "dwindling supplies caused by inaction by Congress." This inaction has forced rationing of ammunition among Ukrainian soldiers and contributed to Russia's first notable gains in months.
The city's capture will likely boost Russian morale ahead of Putin's re-election bid next month – a victory he is almost certain to secure. It's also a step towards Moscow strengthening its control over the regional capital of Donetsk, approximately 20 km east. Donetsk has been held by Russian and pro-Russian forces since 2014.
