Is Moldova's Airspace Safe Amid Russia-Ukraine War?
Moldovan airspace remains safe for civilian flights, affirmed Interior Minister Adrian Efros during an interview on RLiveTV.
The official's statement comes in response to the recent discovery of Russian drone debris in the locality of Etulia. Efros emphasised that a decision to close the airspace rests solely with the competent authorities.
"Any decision to close the airspace is made by a specialised commission. We are dealing with isolated incidents, particularly as these attacks occur at night. The relevant agencies must assess all vulnerabilities and take necessary actions. The continued openness of our airspace indicates minimal risk, ensuring safety for civil aviation," Efros stated.
At the outset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, authorities in Chișinău closed Moldovan airspace, redirecting flights to neighbouring airports. A partial reopening followed in March of that year, with no current restrictions in place. Since the invasion, at least five rockets or rocket fragments have fallen within the Republic of Moldova's territory.
