Moldova Energy Market Joins EU with OPCOM Deal
Moldova has chosen a subsidiary of the Romanian energy exchange, OPCOM, to operate its energy market.
This decision will integrate the country's electricity market into the European Union and stimulate competitive changes in the market, explained the Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov.
The designated operator will also work to consolidate the energy market under fair and transparent conditions.
"In 2022, Moldova and Ukraine synchronised their electronic systems with the European model and introduced a balancing market. Now, it's time for Moldova to establish its own energy exchange. We've selected the 'M' energy market operator, an OPCOM subsidiary, to fulfil this role. This will facilitate market coupling and integrate Moldova's market into the broader EU electricity network," said Victor Parlicov.
Importantly, this action aligns with the Memorandum signed in mid-December 2023 in Chisinau by Energy Minister Victor Parlicov and his Romanian counterpart, Sebastian Burduja. The document outlines the establishment of a Romanian energy exchange subsidiary in Chisinau to manage and connect Moldova's energy market to the European system.
