EU Sanctions Target Individuals Destabilising Moldova
According to information published by the European institution, Moldova is one of the countries most affected by the consequences of Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.
"There are serious, increased, and continuous attempts to destabilise the country. Today's sanctions send a strong political signal of the EU's unwavering support for Moldova's stability, independence, and sovereignty. The EU remains determined to crack down on those who destabilise our immediate neighbourhood," said Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The sanctions target a paramilitary organisation called the Association of People with Epaulets "Scutul Poporului", which has repeatedly attempted to undermine Moldova's democratic government, including inciting riots and violent demonstrations. The organisation's leader is also sanctioned.
Others sanctioned include: the deputy head of the Operational Information Department within Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), responsible for covert operations in Moldova, particularly in the Transnistrian region since 2016. The Council also sanctioned directors of media companies that own several channels in the country, known for promoting messages that obstruct and undermine the democratic political process. The list further includes individuals involved in spreading disinformation, inciting violence, or linked to a major banking fraud case.
Targeted individuals and the entity will have their assets frozen. Additionally, they will be barred from travelling or transiting through EU member states.
"Efforts to destabilise Moldova have increased significantly since the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, posing a direct threat to the stability and security of the EU's external borders," the statement added.
In April of last year, at Moldova's request, the EU established a framework for sanctions against persons responsible for supporting or implementing actions that undermine or threaten the sovereignty and independence of the country.
