US imposes sanctions on Marina Tauber: Logsdon: "Citizens deserve a future free of the Kremlin's malign influence"

Today, the United States announced sanctions against deputy Marina Tauber for facilitating the attempts of the convicted fugitive oligarch Ilan Şor to undermine the electoral processes in Moldova in the interests of the Kremlin by illegally buying votes, states the US Embassy in Chisinau. For now, the person concerned has not reacted to the decision of the American authorities.

"Citizens of the Republic of Moldova deserve free and fair democratic institutions and processes. They deserve a future free of the Kremlin's malign influence. The United States welcomes the progress made by Moldova in implementing democratic and economic reforms. We will continue to support the people and government of Moldova in building a more democratic, prosperous and secure future", said the US Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Kent D. Logsdon.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean commented on the US Government's announcement of sanctions against Marina Tauber.

US President Joe Biden has announced that the United States is imposing more than 500 new sanctions on Russia over its ongoing war against Ukraine and the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The United States is also imposing new export restrictions on nearly 100 organizations for providing covert support to the Russian military machine.

We remind you that on October 26, 2022, the United States Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Moldovan oligarchs Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Șor "for actions related to systemic corruption and interference in the elections in Moldova, supported by the Kremlin". Apart from the two, seven other people and 12 entities are targeted.

Then, the head of state Maia Sandu expressed her hope that these findings of the legal bodies in the USA will serve as an example for the judiciary in the Republic of Moldova. On the other hand, Ilan Șor declared that the imposed sanctions do not affect him, and Vlad Plahotniuc announced his intention to return to politics, something that has never happened before.

On May 30, the European Union adopted the first sanctions for five people for actions to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. It is about the leaders of the Șor Party - Ilan Șor and Marina Tauber, the fugitive businessman Vlad Plahotniuc, the leader of the PACE Party, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc and the Russian businessman, Igor Ceaika, considered a close associate of the former head of state and leader of the socialists, Igor Dodon .

Great Britain, Canada and Norway have also imposed sanctions on several politicians and businessmen from the Republic of Moldova.
