Two years of war in Ukraine // Jens Stoltenberg: The situation on the battlefield is extremely difficult, but let's not lose hope

NATO's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, on Saturday asked Ukraine and its allies "not to lose hope", on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the invasion of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to AFP, Agerpres reports.

"The situation on the battlefield remains extremely difficult. President Putin's objective to dominate Ukraine has not changed, there is no indication that he is preparing for peace," NATO's Secretary General said in a recorded message.

"But we must not lose hope. Ukraine has repeatedly demonstrated outstanding capabilities and fierce determination," he insisted in this video posted on NATO's website.

The two-year anniversary of the conflict comes as under-equipped Ukrainian troops struggle to hold the front line and uncertainty remains over US support, with new aid blocked in Congress.

Jens Stoltenberg recalls recent promises of military aid from NATO countries, "worth several billion dollars".

“This includes decisive capabilities such as artillery ammunition, air defense and combat ships, as well as equipment and spare parts for (aircraft) F-16s, drones and mine clearance equipment. More support is on the way,” he said.

Moscow started this war with the aim of "closing NATO's door to Ukraine, denying it the right to choose its own path", stated Jens Stoltenberg. "But the exact opposite is happening: Ukraine is closer than ever to NATO," he emphasized.

According to him, Ukraine will join NATO: "The question is not "if", but "when". "As we prepare you for this coming day, NATO will continue to stand with you for Ukraine's security and ours," he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praized the "extraordinary resistance of the Ukrainian people" on Saturday as she arrived in Kiev, where she is making a visit to mark two years of conflict, alongside the prime ministers of Canada, Belgium and Italy.
