Ten couples from the Republic of Moldova get married on Dragobete
Every year, on February 24, we celebrate Dragobete, the Romanian holiday of love. According to the Public Services Agency (ASP), on this day, 10 couples officiated the marriage at the civil status service.
"On February 24, 2024, ten couples officiated the marriage at the civil status service. Last year, on the same date, the civil status services registered 49 marriages", informs ASP.
At the same time, the quoted source presented the information regarding the first name certified in the civil status documents, which means "Dragostea": Dragostea - 2 people, Dragostita - 1 person, Dragostita - 2 people, Dragostina - 15 people, Drăgostina - 2 people, Dragostin – 8 people, Drăgostin – 1 person, Liubovia – 19 people, Liubovi – 9307 people, Liubov – 5837 people, Liuba – 6936 people.
Dragobete is said to have been the son of Baba Dochia, an extremely handsome and passionate young man, considered the one who officiated the "wedding" of all animals in heaven. Later, it was believed that he was also the one who bound the relationships between people. That is why, Dragobete is in popular tradition the protector of love and the one who brings luck to lovers.
