Moldova's Fight for Democracy: US Backs Reforms Against Threats
Moldovan President Maia Sandu met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Christopher W. Smith to discuss regional security and their commitment to supporting Ukraine.
President Maia Sandu highlighted the strengthening bilateral partnership in recent years, thanking the US government for its ongoing support of the country and its citizens. She reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to reforms aimed at modernization and EU membership, underscoring the importance of US assistance in these efforts. President Sandu also praised joint initiatives combating corruption and countering attempts to undermine Moldovan democracy.
The current regional situation and ways the US could assist Moldova in implementing reforms and advancing its European agenda were discussed during the meeting between the US official and Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
The Prime Minister appreciated the United States' consistent support for Moldova's modernization, efforts to improve the quality of life, and stimulate economic growth. Prime Minister Dorin Recean welcomed the US decision to sanction individuals undermining the Republic of Moldova's security.
Both parties reconfirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight for peace and stability across Europe.
