Sweden Joins NATO: Hungary Approves Membership After Delay
Hungary's parliament approved Sweden's NATO membership on Monday, clearing the final hurdle for the Nordic country's historic shift away from neutrality.
The vote ends months of delay over Sweden's bid to join the alliance. It follows a visit by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Friday, during which the two countries signed an arms agreement.
"Sweden is abandoning 200 years of neutrality and military non-alignment," Kristersson said in a news conference. "We are joining NATO to better defend our values and what we believe in, together with others."
Hungary's government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, faced pressure from NATO allies to approve Sweden's membership.
