Deadly Airstrikes Near Damascus Raise Regional Tensions

Israel carried out airstrikes near Damascus on Wednesday, according to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, marking the latest attack against the Syrian capital attributed to the Israeli military, as reported by news.ro.

These attacks come amid escalating regional tensions since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in October 2023.

"The Israeli adversary launched aerial strikes from the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting sites in the Damascus area," the ministry specified in a statement.

"Our air defence responded and intercepted the majority of the launched missiles," it added, without providing further details.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus reported hearing loud explosions followed by ambulance sirens.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based NGO with an extensive network of sources in war-torn Syria, stated that the Israeli strikes resulted in the deaths of two pro-Hezbollah combatants and targeted "sites where Iran-backed groups are stationed, including the Lebanese Hezbollah," in two locations near the capital.

The Israeli army has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since the onset of the civil war in this neighbouring country in 2011.

When asked by AFP about Wednesday's attack, the Israeli military declined to comment.

Israel rarely comments on such attacks but asserts that it will not permit Iran, its declared adversary, to establish a presence on its border.

The attributed Israeli strikes have intensified in Syria since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip in October, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
