Moldova Crisis: Russia Backs Separatists, West Condemns

France has accused Russia of orchestrating efforts to destabilise Moldova. This comes after pro-Russian separatists in Moldova's breakaway Transnistria region appealed to Moscow for assistance.

"Moldova is facing escalating destabilisation efforts, very likely led by Russia," said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine. "The appeal of the non-autonomous separatists for so-called protection from Moscow is a familiar scenario."

Lemoine tied Russia's actions to its ongoing aggression in Ukraine. "This surge of Russian hostility necessitates a united response," he said, referring to recent "outrageous" statements by Russia against France.

He confirmed the crisis will be a key focus at an upcoming meeting of European foreign and defence ministers in Paris next week, alongside bolstering support for Ukraine. The meeting, reportedly slated for March 7th, was planned following a conference on Ukraine earlier this week.

The summit aims to generate specific proposals on issues like cybersecurity, arms production, defence for nations threatened by Russia (particularly Moldova), safeguarding Ukraine's border with Belarus, and demining operations.

On Wednesday, Transnistria's leadership requested "protective measures" from Russia, claiming increased pressure from Moldova amid the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Russia swiftly responded, prioritising the safety of Transnistria's residents and promising to carefully consider the request.

The United States condemned Moscow's actions. "The United States strongly supports Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders," a State Department spokesperson declared.
