Moldova Passes Law Regulating Biological Banks

Deputies have passed a draft law establishing regulations for the Human Biological Bank.

This pioneering legislation provides clear guidelines for the operation of biological banks, including those dedicated to scientific research.

Adrian Belîi, chairman of the Committee on Social Protection, Health and Family and a co-author of the initiative, highlighted the law's introduction of a clear definition for human biological banks (or biobanks).

A biobank is an institution that houses organised collections of biological samples and associated data, established and maintained by a designated founder. The new law outlines requirements for the processing and storage of liquid samples. It also establishes rules for handling DNA descriptions, health records, and genealogical information of donors.

The legislation mandates the creation of a National Registry of Biological Banks. This registry will track all biological banks within the country and detail the types of samples and data they hold. Its implementation will bolster oversight of these institutions, safeguarding the privacy and security of stored biological materials.
