Moldovan President Denounces Russian Interference, Emphasises Unity and European Integration
President Maia Sandu of Moldova has rejected the notion of the Transnistrian region joining the Russian Federation, dismissing it as implausible. Sandu, fresh from attending a regional summit in Tirana, Albania, accused Moscow of resorting to scare tactics to influence Moldovan citizens, particularly during the upcoming elections.
Sandu stressed the importance of Moldovans remaining united against Russian meddling, highlighting Ukraine's role as a shield. She reassured citizens of their safety and reiterated Moldova's commitment to European integration.
The president expressed concern over recent events in Tiraspol, which she discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Sandu assured citizens of their safety and emphasised that Ukraine's assistance will continue.
Asked about the possibility of Tiraspol aligning with Russia, Sandu dismissed it as unlikely, citing Ukrainian support as a deterrent. She warned against Russian interference in Moldovan affairs, emphasising the need to protect the integrity of Moldova's electoral process.
Sandu criticised the Russian Federation's attempts to influence Moldova's internal affairs, highlighting their disregard for Moldovan interests. She called for unity among Moldovan citizens in the face of continued hostility from Russia.
Sandu reiterated Moldova's commitment to European integration and emphasised the need to chart a path of peace and prosperity independent of Russian influence.
Regarding Moldova's relations with Russia, Sandu expressed a desire for peaceful and democratic relations but criticised Russia's aggressive behaviour.
Sandu's remarks came following her participation in the regional summit in Tirana, where discussions focused on regional cooperation and support for EU accession efforts. Meanwhile, Tiraspol recent "congress" calling for Russian intervention was criticised by authorities in Chisinau as propaganda.
