Zelensky Rejects Erdogan's Peace Proposal; Ukraine Stands Firm
President Zelensky rejected his Turkish counterpart Erdogan's proposal to hold peace negotiations with Russia, stating that those responsible for destruction and loss of life cannot be included in such discussions, as he addressed the issue in Istanbul.
However, Erdogan acknowledged Ukraine's peace initiative and affirmed Kiev's rights over Crimea. Zelensky also highlighted the plight of the Crimean Tatars who have been subject to arrest and repression by Russian authorities.
The international community is preparing for a peace forum in neutral Switzerland, yet Erdogan proposed that Turkey host the negotiations.
During recent consultations, Erdogan discussed various issues affecting stability in the Black Sea region, including export corridors and navigation safety. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's stance, asserting that Russia's participation in negotiations is contingent upon a unified position being established at the Swiss summit. He emphasised the need for a comprehensive and just peace for Ukraine and underscored Turkey's pivotal role in the peace process alongside the international community.
In a separate development, construction of two corvettes for Ukraine is underway in the port of Istanbul, signifying Turkey's support.
Zelensky also engaged in discussions with leaders of Turkish defence companies. Additionally, Turkish and Ukrainian officials have signed an agreement facilitating the exchange of information between customs agencies.
