Russian Propaganda Intensifies Following Moldova's Arms Treaty Withdrawal

Russian propaganda efforts have escalated in the wake of the Republic of Moldova's announced withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

Unverified reports have circulated alleging that authorities in Chișinău could initiate an attack on the left bank of the Nistru River.

State Secretary for Defense Valeriu Mija refutes these reports as baseless speculation. He underscores the treaty's obsolescence and emphasises Moldova's commitment to transparent security decisions.

"Unfounded interpretations are being disseminated. We must urge the public to focus on verifiable facts. The Republic of Moldova is a democratic state with robust democratic oversight of its security and defence sectors. Our decisions are made openly and ratified by Parliament. Moldova actively participates in other international frameworks designed to bolster security measures. For instance, through the UN, we maintain transparency regarding our military budget and the import/export of conventional arms," stated Valeriu Mija, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense.

Mija highlighted the Russian Federation's failure to uphold its treaty obligations.

"The last adapted version was defined at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul, where the Russian Federation reaffirmed its duty to withdraw troops from Moldovan territory. It's worth noting that a partial withdrawal has occurred – specifically, 20 tons of ammunition from the Cobasna depot – though these were classified as conventional weapons," Mija emphasised.

Last week, the Moldovan government resolved to suspend its participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces. Parliament is expected to formally address the decision.
