Moldova Rehires Fired Chisinau Care Assistants

Personal assistants in the municipality of Chisinau who were previously dismissed and had their salaries cut will be rehired by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who stresses that it is a temporary solution. According to the Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Alexei Buzu, there are approximately 1,200 people who will be hired by the ministry through a newly created service. The money for salaries will be allocated from the Reserve Fund, but, for now, the exact amount is unknown.

“The Moldovan government is stepping in to address a critical situation in Chisinau caused by Mayor Ceban's decisions. Six hundred personal assistants have lost their jobs, and hundreds more are facing cuts to their already insufficient wages. We cannot abandon these caregivers who provide essential support to their families, and we will not tolerate Mayor Ceban's mismanagement of public funds.” Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed his disapproval.

“All personal assistants who were wrongfully dismissed and whose salaries were reduced will be hired by the ministry through a newly created service, starting in May of this year. This does not mean that we will take over, cancel or interfere with the competencies of the municipality of Chisinau in this area. We continue to call on the municipality and Mayor Ceban to return to the legal framework,” said Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labor and Social Protection.

The spokesperson for the Chisinau City Hall, Vasile Chirilescu, told Moldova 1 that the Executive is causing serious problems in Chisinau. Moreover, he claims that the entire Government was the one that created the problem of personal assistants by cutting the budget for their salaries. The City Hall's reaction also states that it is the duty of the executive to ensure equally all citizens of the country.

Previously, the Chisinau City Hall announced that the municipality's budget no longer allows them to pay the salaries of personal assistants and that the burden on the budget is too high. Therefore, several personal assistants were dismissed, and others had their salaries cut in half.

There are a total of 2,200 personal assistants in the municipality of Chisinau. In total, the number of personal assistants in the country is seven thousand. A personal assistant has a net salary of 4,900 lei.
