Moldova Seeks NATO Aid to Boost Defense, Eyes EU

Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss implementing the objectives of the Republic of Moldova-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), strengthening Moldova's defence capabilities and cooperation in combating new threats to its security.

"We reiterated our interest in the organisation's expertise and assistance in modernising the security and defence sector of the Republic of Moldova. Despite all the challenges, we will continue our path towards EU membership and strengthening cooperation with NATO," said Mihai Popșoi.

The officials also discussed the latest developments in regional security and the risks posed by the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine. Moldova will continue to support Ukraine during these difficult times.

"The NATO Deputy Secretary General reaffirmed the Alliance's commitment to the partnership with the Republic of Moldova, respecting the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and neutral status. Mircea Geoană reiterated his support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova," the Foreign Minister announced.

Between March 19 and 22, Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi is making two official visits – to Brussels and Budapest. The head of Moldovan diplomacy will have meetings with several European officials.
