The referendum and the presidential election can be held on the same day
The Constitutional Court rejected the request submitted by the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), in which it requested the verification of the constitutionality of holding the republican referendum, on the same day as the presidential or parliamentary elections. The High Court justifies its decision by the fact that the organization and simultaneous holding of several polls is a common practice in European states.
The Court also mentioned that the reason for organizing the polls on the same day could be determined by the need to reduce expenses, and the organization of a referendum simultaneously with the elections may lead to an increase in the number of participants in both polls.
We remind you that the request was submitted by BCS deputies, Vladimir Voronin, Vlad Batrîncea and Diana Caraman, who believe that holding the national referendum on joining the European Union on the same day as the presidential elections will create confusion among citizens and, according to them, is a defiance of the legal norms.
