Record Time Set in Epic Ultramarathon Across Two Nations
Emotions ran high for participants in the Rubicon 2024 ultramarathon as they reached the finish line in the Romanian capital on Sunday.
The athletes completed the extraordinary 478-kilometre (297-mile) race between Chisinau and Bucharest in a record time of just 52 hours.
The race was structured in multiple stages that took place during the day and at night, with each stage covering distances between 7 and 15 kilometres (4.3 and 9.3 miles). The gruelling route, completed in 52 hours, crossed various regions, including Chisinau, Gagauzia, and four districts in Moldova - Ialoveni, Cimislia, Taraclia, and Cahul. It then traversed five counties in Romania - Galati, Braila, Buzau, Ialomita, and Ilfov, as well as the capital Bucharest. At the end of the marathon, the participants joined in a celebratory traditional Romanian dance called a "hora".
The ultramarathon kicked off on Friday from the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau. The event was organised by a sporting association with the support of the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the National Agency for Sport of Romania.
