France Raises Anti-Terror Alert Amidst Islamic State Threats
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Sunday evening the elevation of France's Vigipirate plan—the nation's anti-terror alert system—to its highest level: "attack emergency."
This decision followed the Moscow attack claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State, as reported by Le Figaro.
"In light of the Islamic State's claim of the attack and the threats facing our nation, we have chosen to raise the Vigipirate posture to its utmost level: attack emergency," Gabriel Attal declared at X, following a defence council convened at the Elysée Palace.
The Vigipirate plan had been demoted to level 2 ("increased security - risk of attack") back in January.
France's terrorist alert system comprises three tiers, with the highest level triggered by an attack within the country or abroad, or when the prospect of such an attack is deemed imminent.
This level permits the implementation of extraordinary security measures, including heightened patrols by the armed forces at public locations such as train stations, airports, and places of worship.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy that France is set to host the Olympic Games this summer.
