Europe Gathers to Address Security, Ukraine Crisis
The United Kingdom will host the meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) on July 18, bringing together approximately 50 leaders from Europe, announces the UK embassy in Chisinau.
The summit will take place at Blenheim Palace – the birthplace and ancestral home of former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who played a central role in the fight against aggression and tyranny in Europe.
It should be noted that the date of the meeting was set with a delay. Reuters reports that the United Kingdom was reluctant to set a date for the meeting of the European Political Community, a group of over 40 European states formed in 2022 after the full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine, because Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was considering calling national elections in May.
"I am delighted that the UK will host the next meeting of the European Political Community at the historic Blenheim Palace. This is an important forum for cooperation across the whole of Europe on the issues that affect us all, threatening our security and prosperity. From providing our full support to Ukraine to stopping the scourge of human trafficking and illegal migration, the meeting will bring together, under the leadership of the United Kingdom, our European friends, partners and neighbours to address our common challenges," Sunak said in a statement.
This will be the fourth edition of the European Political Community Summit. In the fall of last year, the CPE meeting was hosted by Spain. The Republic of Moldova hosted the second European Political Community Summit, in Bulboaca, on June 1, 2023. The first meeting took place in October 2022 in Prague, organised by the Czech presidency of the European Union.
At the meetings in the Czech Republic and Spain, the Republic of Moldova was represented by President Maia Sandu.
The Bulboaca Summit discussed the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, ways to resolve frozen conflicts, and support for Ukraine in the war started by the Russian Federation. According to some experts, by organising such a large-scale event, the Republic of Moldova has demonstrated that it is a strong state, exceeding the expectations of a candidate country.
