UN Urges Immediate Gaza Ceasefire; US Role Crucial
The United Nations Security Council has enacted a resolution urging an "immediate cessation of hostilities" in the Gaza Strip following the United States' decision to abstain from vetoing the measure, thereby altering its previous stance, as reported by BBC.
Furthermore, the resolution demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
The Security Council has been deadlocked since the outset of the conflict in October, unable to reach a consensus on a ceasefire plea.
The United States indicates a growing divergence with its ally, Israel, regarding the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
Washington has criticised Israel for the rising death toll in Gaza, where more than 32,000 people - particularly women and children - have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, as per the territory's Health Ministry, under Hamas administration.
Furthermore, the US has urged Israel to increase efforts in delivering aid to Gaza, where, according to the US, the entire population faces severe food insecurity.
The war erupted on October 7 after Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group governing Gaza, launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties, as per the Israeli count, and capturing 253 individuals as hostages in Gaza.
