Ukraine: Difficult situation on the front, near the city of Ceasiv Iar in the east of the country

The Ukrainian army said on Monday that it is in a difficult situation near the city of Ceasiv Iar in the east of the country, where Russia is concentrating its offensive, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

Moscow has made progress on the front in recent months, increasing its advantage as Kiev faces a shortage of ammunition supplied by its Western allies.

"The situation regarding Ceasiv Iar is difficult and tense, and this is not the first day" when it happened, said Oleg Kalashnikov, press officer of the Ukrainian 26th Artillery Brigade.

“Today it is the focal point of the enemy in his assault operations. He is trying to get through our defense to get to Ceasiv Iar," he added.

He said Russia had stepped up its use of powerful guided bombs in the area, as well as attacks "on populated areas and our fortified positions."

Ukraine has been on the defensive for several months due to a lack of ammunition. The $60 billion in aid promised by Washington has been blocked for months because of political rivalries between Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

The commander of Ukraine's ground forces estimated on Friday that a summer offensive by Russia with 100,000 troops was possible, but added that this was the "gloomiest forecast".
