Diplomatic Fallout: Latvia's Expulsion of Russian Diplomat
Latvia has declared a staff member of the Russian embassy in Riga as persona non grata and has expelled him from the country, as reported by dpa and cited by Agerpres.
At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomat is required to leave Latvia before April 10.
The charge d'affaires of the Russian mission was informed about this situation on Wednesday in a statement.
The Russian has been expelled because the Latvian side referred to it as "unacceptable and provocative public communication followed by the embassy over an extended period," clearly contradicting the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Despite repeated warnings, the Russian embassy engaged in inaccurate public communication aimed at discrediting Latvia's state institutions and inciting hatred in society, according to the statement.
The Foreign Ministry in Riga did not provide any further details.
Latvia, a former Soviet republic bordering Russia, hosts a significant minority of Russian descent.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine over two years ago has escalated tensions between the two countries.
