Chisinau Mayor Criticises Government: Financial Strain Revealed
Ion Ceban, the mayor of Chisinau, delivered a critique of the government's actions during a session at the Council of Europe.
He emphasised that the municipality is facing significant financial strain, lacking adequate funding from the state budget. Additionally, Ceban's expenditure of public funds has drawn criticism from councillors of the PAS party.
Speaking at the Congress of Local Authorities of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Ceban addressed the strained relationship between the government and the municipality.
Ceban highlighted that despite being delegated powers by the government, the municipality has not been allocated sufficient financial resources. He cited as an example the issue of salary increases for city hall employees, which require over 150 million lei from the municipal budget.
Furthermore, Chisinau has yet to receive approval for its 2024 budget, raising concerns among PAS municipal councillors that Ceban is intentionally delaying in order to have more discretion over public funds.
Critics accuse Ceban of squandering financial resources on unnecessary expenses such as trips and foreign policy endeavours, while neglecting his duties in managing municipal affairs. Zinaida Popa from the PAS party voiced these concerns, highlighting the need for greater accountability in public spending.
