The Republic of Moldova, convicted at the ECtHR for bad medical care in prisons

The Republic of Moldova was sentenced at the ECtHR. Our country is to pay twelve thousand euros in compensation to a former prisoner, Tatiana Machina, who complained about the quality of medical care in Penitentiary No. 13, which, according to her, endangers the health of the prisoners.

According to Promo-LEX, the plaintiff is a person with locomotor impairments. She complained to the European Court of Human Rights about poor material conditions of detention in Penitentiary No. 13, overcrowding, poor quality and insufficient quantity of food, lack of hygiene and detention in a penitentiary not adapted for people with special needs. At the same time, Tatiana Machina says that she was infected with Hepatitis C as a result of medical negligence in the penitentiary.

Finally, the ECtHR ordered that the Government of the Republic of Moldova to pay the applicant, for three months, the sum of 9,800 euros, as moral damage, and the sum of 2,500 euros, as costs and expenses of representation and legal assistance. Tatiana Machina was released from detention in July 2016.
