US President Urges Ceasefire and Aid for Gaza, Israel Complies
The Israeli government has announced its decision to permit the "temporary" delivery of aid to the besieged and famine-threatened Gaza Strip through the Ashdod port and the Erez crossing point.
This announcement was made by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, as reported by AFP and cited by Agerpres.
In a statement released shortly after a warning from US President Joe Biden, the war cabinet has authorised the government "to take immediate measures to increase humanitarian aid" with the aim of "avoiding a humanitarian crisis" and "ensuring the continuation of the fighting."
During a roughly 30-minute phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, the US president, a staunch supporter of Israel until now, demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities following an Israeli attack on a humanitarian convoy of the NGO World Central Kitchen, resulting in the death of seven volunteers.
Furthermore, the American leader emphasised that he expects from Israel "the implementation of specific, concrete, and tangible measures to respond to the suffering of civilians, the humanitarian crisis, and to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers," according to a brief summary of the phone call released by the White House.
