Moldova Accuses Russia of Destabilisation Campaign
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has stated that a recent drone attack on a military unit in the breakaway region of Transnistria was a provocation orchestrated by Russia. The incident, reported on April 1 by the separatist regime in Tiraspol, involved an alleged kamikaze drone strike.
Prime Minister Recean asserted that the purpose of such incidents is to sow fear and instability within Moldovan society.
"We are seeing several provocations designed to induce anxiety and destabilise society," Recean said. "I want to emphasise that our citizens have recognized these tactics and have shown a strong, resilient response. These provocations are supported by the Russian Federation in an attempt to escalate tensions."
This latest incident follows a similar alleged drone attack in Transnistria two weeks prior, which Moldovan officials also dismissed as staged.
Recean's statements underscore the ongoing accusations from Moldova that Russia seeks to destabilise the country. Moldova has recently expelled several Russian diplomats and accused Russia of attempting to overthrow its government – allegations which Russia has denied.
The situation in Transnistria remains a significant point of conflict between Moldova and Russia. The breakaway region, predominantly Russian-speaking, has maintained de facto independence from Moldova since the early 1990s. Russia maintains a military presence in Transnistria and stands accused of supporting the separatist regime. The recent events in Transnistria fuel concerns about the potential for a broader conflict between Moldova and Russia.
