Exploring Myth and Memory: Romanian Artist's Exhibition in Chișinău
Ancient symbols, images from Greek mythology, personal memories, and experiences, meticulously crafted by a distinguished contemporary Romanian painter, are currently on display in Chișinău.
The National Art Museum of Moldova is hosting a personal exhibition by the esteemed master Gheorghe I. Anghel, showcasing paintings alongside ceramic, wood, and metal objects. Each piece reflects the breadth of the artist's exploration and the depth of his artistic vision.
Entitled "The Trap for My Muses," the exhibition features six cages symbolising the artist's muses, sacrificed in pursuit of his art. Accompanying these are paintings depicting Gheorghe I. Anghel as a visionary transcending earthly realms.
Tudor Zbârnea, director of the National Art Museum, elucidated on Anghel's work: "He draws from antiquity with an extraordinarily modern script, infusing his art with depth and sensuality. Each piece unveils new layers of artistic expression, showcasing a unique perspective."
Despite his venerable age of 86, Anghel persists in his studio, his exhibitions acclaimed across Europe, from France to Greece. Reflecting on his return to Chișinău, Anghel remarked on the city's positive transformation, now standing alongside Romania's major cultural hubs.
Visitor reactions to Anghel's creations have been overwhelmingly positive. Student Diana Nichita expressed fascination, likening the experience to navigating a labyrinth of meaning. Renowned artist Mihai Țăruș echoed his anticipation, eager to witness Anghel's artistry firsthand in Chișinău.
The artist's profound impact was evident in the sentiments shared by visual artist Victoria Viprada and Anatol Rurac. Viprada praised Anghel's use of colour and form, while Rurac acknowledged the artist's journey towards artistic freedom.
For Anghel, the studio serves as both sanctuary and struggle, a sentiment he candidly expressed: "I've endured tremendous hardship in my work."
Anghel's acclaimed oeuvre, honoured in Romania and throughout Europe, is on display at the National Art Museum of Moldova until May 12th.
