Whooping cough outbreak in Europe: Number of cases at highest level in 60 years
A highly dangerous disease from the Victorian Era has made a strong comeback in Europe. In recent months, there have been the most cases in 60 years of whooping cough, an infectious disease that affects the lungs and airways. Most of the patients were detected in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Belgium, Spain and Great Britain.
In England, in the first two months of this year, 913 cases were registered, while at the end of 2023, there were 853 cases throughout the year. So far, the worst situation is in Croatia: over 6,200 sick.
According to a report in the British Medical Journal, the number of cases is increasing as the vaccination rate drops.
