Deputy Secretary-General Urges Patience in Moldova's Reform Journey

With assistance from European organisations in combating corruption, the Republic of Moldova is steadily advancing in its pursuit of justice, albeit requiring patience. It's imperative to acknowledge that these fundamental reforms demand time.

This perspective was shared by Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Bjorn Berge, during an interview for Moldova 1's Diplomatic Dimension show. Berge emphasised that Moldova aims to implement a series of recommendations by the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) by June 2025.

"The Republic of Moldova's government must undertake reforms related to human rights, the rule of law system, and judicial reform for accession," Berge stated. "Six out of nine conditions have already been met, signifying a significant achievement within a relatively short timeframe. However, further actions are required concurrently."

Berge also highlighted the latest GRECO evaluation, acknowledging progress in establishing the institutional and legal framework for combating corruption while requesting improvements in various areas.

"It's worth noting that GRECO, as a body of the Council of Europe, assists states in identifying shortcomings in national anti-corruption policies, leading to legislative, institutional, and practical reforms," Berge concluded.
