Moldova Prepares for EU Accession Referendum: Process and Objectives
In the upcoming referendum accompanying this autumn's presidential elections, citizens will be posed with the pivotal question: "Do you support the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union?"
This significant announcement came from the MP Veronica Roșca, the president of the legal, appointments, and immunities commission, during a press briefing.
Roșca emphasised that the proposal to initiate the constitutional referendum for revision would be forwarded to the Constitutional Court today. Subsequently, she added, the draft resolution will be presented to Parliament, which will delineate the date for the constitutional referendum and the precise question directed towards citizens.
The objective of the constitutional amendment project, as underscored by the PAS deputy, is to reaffirm the European identity of Moldova's populace and to declare integration into the European Union as the Republic of Moldova's strategic objective.
The proposed constitutional adjustments entail adding two new paragraphs to the preamble, and the establishment of a new title - "Integration into the European Union." The Republic of Moldova's accession to the constituent treaties of the European Union, alongside the amendments to these treaties, is proposed to be enacted by Parliament through organic law.
Furthermore, it is underscored that the provisions within the constituent treaties of the European Union, as well as other legally binding EU acts, shall supersede conflicting domestic laws, in adherence to the accession act.
Article two of the draft law stipulates that its enforcement shall occur upon publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova, following the Constitutional Court's decision confirming the results of the Republican Referendum.
According to the draft resolution submitted by Parliament to the Constitutional Court, the proposed referendum is scheduled to take place on October 20th.
