IAEA Convenes Emergency Meeting on Ukraine Nuclear Attacks
The UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will convene an emergency meeting of its Board of Governors on Thursday.
The meeting comes at the request of both Ukraine and Russia, following accusations of drone attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, according to Reuters.
Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, sits dormant near the Ukrainian war front. Though all reactors are currently shut down, the facility requires constant power to cool the reactors and avert a potentially catastrophic meltdown.
This will be the first time the Board has convened to discuss the recent attacks on Zaporizhzhia since the latest incidents. The meeting is likely to be highly contentious, with both Russia and Ukraine seeking to assign blame for the attacks. The outcome remains uncertain, but the Board could potentially adopt a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a Russian withdrawal from the plant.
