Moldova Considers Classroom Phone Ban

Mobile phones could be banned in Moldovan schools during class hours, stated Education Minister Dan Perciun in a video message posted to his Facebook page.

The Minister announced the formation of a working group next week to explore regulating mobile phone use in educational settings. This group will draft a public policy proposal, which will determine whether new provisions will be introduced into the Education Code.

"Sweden already enforces similar regulations, and Romania and France are moving in the same direction. This issue is gaining traction across Europe, and I believe it warrants discussion within the Republic of Moldova. Next week, the Ministry of Education will establish a working group to examine international practices, analyse relevant scientific literature, and address the practical implications of regulating phone use, including storage considerations."

In some schools in Chisinau, teachers already prohibit the use of mobile phones during lessons through internal regulations. Similarly, Romania restricts the use of digital devices brought from home, except in designated spaces or as outlined in the specific regulations of each school.

Recent months have seen Brazil and Spain implement comparable measures to address "digital addiction." Statistics show that 97% of high school students bring mobile phones to school. Many students have their devices open on their desks and glance at the screens every 3-4 minutes, diverting their attention away from their teachers and towards their phones.
