EU Sanctions Iran Over Drone Attack on Israel

The European Union decided on Wednesday to implement new sanctions against Iran, targeting drone and missile manufacturers, according to European Council President Charles Michel.

"We have decided to implement sanctions on Iran in order to deliver a clear message" following the attack on Israel, he declared at the conclusion of a summit in Brussels attended by the leaders of all 27 member states.

"The aim is to target companies involved in the manufacturing of drones and missiles," he added.

Iran launched drones and missiles towards Israeli territory overnight on Saturday into Sunday, in retaliation for an attack on April 1 on the consular annex of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, blamed on Israel.

Nearly all the rockets and drones were destroyed before hitting Israeli territory. This marked Iran's first direct attack on Israel.

In a statement adopted at the summit's conclusion, EU leaders called on "all parties to exercise utmost restraint and to refrain from any action that could escalate tensions in the region."
